SIERRA AND BAY CIRCUIT
This route ascends from the coast to the heights of Usulután, displaying many environments including the beautiful bay of Jiquilisco, the protected Chahuantique forest, rugged mountain ranges, and various landscapes and climates for all tastes. There is also a wide range of accommodation and restaurants.
Jiquilisco Bay: The largest mangrove forest in El Salvador, a Biosphere Reserve, a Ramsar Site with virgin islands perfect for bird watching and with calm waters ideal for water sports.
Chahuantique Forest: a tropical forest and protected area, with hiking trails. This is the habitat of the spider monkey and the beautiful Big Blue butterfly.
Joy: a quiet town located in the sierra with a very cool climate, and exceptional viewpoints. There are plants and flower nurseries and there is a good choice of dining and lodging services.
Alegria Lagoon: often covered with fog and surrounded by lush vegetation. It is located at 1400 meters above sea level. Nobel Prize literature winner Gabriela Mistral named this lagoon as “The Americas Emerald” due to the beautiful turquoise waters of this crater lagoon. It is a quiet place perfect for resting and meditation.
Berlin: a town with great coffee tradition. There is a large geothermal power plant that has a thermal spa. Visit its museum and explore its streets while you enjoy cool climate most of the year.
