Built in the mid nineteenth century, the building of the former School of Arts “José Mariano Mendez” still survives, contrasting with the surrounding houses that around Colón Park.

This stunning building stands where the first school in Santa Ana was built. Years later, José Mariano Mendez, a native of this city, founded the School of Arts and Crafts in the same place.

Historic records say that Mendez was a lawyer and a Catholic priest who that lived in Guatemala at the end of the colonial era and early post-independence times.

Mendez is known to have contributed to the development of education in Santa Ana. Some of his actions include: financial help for to the National School for Girls in Santa Ana and a donation of land for the construction of the Chapel “San Jose” at San Juan de Dios Hospital.
