La Libertad Town Square

| |

Located in the historic center of San Salvador, Plaza Libertad was the starting point for this city expansion in the mid-sixteenth century and is now a national icon.

La Libertad Town Square its as historical as it is impressive, there are many activities for visitors, some of them will take you back to the colonial era in the XV century.

History indicates that in 1545, when San Salvador began a new settlement near the Acelhuate river, it followed the Spanish grid system used in most new cities of Latin America at that time. San Salvador grew around an empty space called “Plaza Mayor de Armas” who later became, Plaza Dueñas until it was given its actual name: "Freedom Square".

That is why this plaza witnessed the most important political, economic and religious events that lead to the creation of El Salvador as an independent country from the Spanish Crown.

On the south side of this plaza were institutions like the town hall, the post office and the city prisons. On the East side, stood the original Church “El Rosario” dedicated to the Savior of the World.

In 1911, to commemorate the first centennial of the independence movements a monument was created in this plaza.

This majestic structure of marble and bronze is crowned by the “Angel of Freedom” which holds one laurel crowns in each hand, there are also sculptures and medallions in honor of heroes José Matías Delgado, Juan Manuel Rodriguez, Manuel José Arce and the brothers, Nicolas, Vicente and Manuel Aguilar.

Over the years commercial growth of the capital, helped the creation of ornate portals on the West (between 1915 and 1916) and one year later Dalia Portal, structures that can still be seen as one of the last architectural remains of an era gone by.
