Playas de La Unión
El Icacal, Playas Negras, Maculís, El Flor and El Tamarindo
The province of La Unión has many options for those looking for low populated and beautiful beaches.
As part of Sun and Beach Route in eastern El Salvador, El Icacal offers a pristine beach with practically no tourism infrastructure available, however this is an excellent option for those who like sports activities like soccer, volleyball, jogging or camping on the beach.
Nearby is Las Tunas, El Maculís, Playas Negras, El Tamarindo and El Flor all of them with black sands and interesting rock formations where you will find numerous natural pools to enjoy a refreshing swim in the ocean.
Among the attractions at Maculís Beach is buying fresh seafood from the Collection Center at the association “Acopacífico RL” where they offer curvina, snappers, grouper and the so-called “Yellow Tail” at US$ 1.50 per pound and onwards.
If you continue along the road, Playa El Tamarindo offers incredible views of the Pacific Coast. This site is very popular with local fishermen who offer boat tours to the islands of the Gulf of Fonseca.
Visit the eastern corner of El Salvador and you will be impressed.
Where to eat:
You’ll find small “comedores” (basic restaurants) that offer seafood dishes and other options at low prices, from US$ 2.50 to US$ 5.00. We recommend for you to take ample drinks and snacks, since the area is isolated and there are few stores.
Where to stay:
El Icacal Beach is a broad esplanade, ideal for camping right on the beach. For peace of mind and security, you can request POLITUR (National Police Tourism) escort at no cost. Simply ask for this service one week in advance. We suggest checking the procedure by calling them prior your visit.
In the nearby beaches, 2 kilometers from Playa Las Tunas, there is hotel service and a couple of small hostels that offer accommodation at affordable prices.
How to get there:
If you are traveling from San Salvador, drive along the Coastal Highway (CA-2) going east. After Usulután, find the diversion to “El Delirio” where you must turn right. Then you will find the diversion to “El Cuco”, and to “Intipucá”, finally the one leading to “El Tamarindo” where you must turn right. At the end of this road you will find Playa Las Tunas.
