Salcoatitán Town Square
Known as the “The City of Quetzalcoatl, god of wind and star of dawn” in Nahuatl, this is a quiet town known for being the pioneers at coffee plantation, a tradition dating back to the nineteenth century.
This is the second stop along Ruta de las Flores (if starting from Sonsonate). This town main architectural attraction is the colonial church that is just in front of the town’s picturesque park.
At this place every weekend there is a food festival where visitors can sample delicious traditional dishes of the western region of El Salvador.
Where to eat:
On weekends you will find a wide gastronomic range of options which include delicious typical Salcoatitán corn tamales, chicken tamales, "Psyche" tamales (with refried beans), all corn derivatives you can imagine including “atoles” and the main dish that characterizes this area: fried or boiled cassava served with pork cracklings over a banana leafs .
How to get there:
Drive towards Sonsonate using the Panamerican Highway (CA-1) towards Santa Ana. At “El Poliedro” overpass take the highway towards Sonsonate.
Start your tour through the streets of Sonsonate. Drive along the Flower Route towards Apaneca, the road is well signposted.
Along the way you will find signs indicating you how to reach the destination of you interest along the Route. The journey by car takes about an hour.
If going by bus, there are several options. At the West terminal in San Salvador, you may board “special” bus 205 at US$ 1.30
(Journey takes about1 hour and 15 minutes), regular bus route 205 costs US$ 0.75 USD (journey takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes). You may also board bus 249 bound to Ahuachapán and Sonsonate.
