Balboa Park

Located 12 kilometers from San Salvador, Balboa Park is a natural reserve with abundant vegetation on an area of over 28 acres. It is considered one of the most important ecological reserves on El Salvador’s Balsam Mountains Range and it is located on altitude of 1070 meters above sea level.

It was inaugurated in 1949; it has a cool climate, scenic rock formations and forested areas very representative of tropical temperate forests.

It is named in memory of Spanish Vasco Núñez de Balboa, who “discovered” the Pacific Ocean. That is why there is an Obelisk who reads “Spain, Mother of all People” donated by the Iberian community in 1951. Interestingly, this monument also serves as a sundial and it is located at the entrance of Balboa Park.

In this Park has there are over 20 pupuserias located in "Corn Square" (Maize Plaza), there are children playgrounds with special attention to people with disabilities.

If you like extreme sports there area skating areas, biking trails, sports fields, picnic areas, gazebos and all this surrounded by monuments representing indigenous Salvadoran culture and folk tales.

Balboa Park has a cool climate, very pleasant for visitors. It is the perfect place to relax and leave the hot temperatures of the capital behind and all this just a short drive away.

How to get there:

If driving, take the road to Comalapa International Airport. After passing the cemetery “Gardens of Remembrance” there is a road sign indicating the road that takes you to Planes de Renderos. After a 15 minute drive up the mountains the road there is a diversion. Left to Panchimalco and right to Puerta del Diablo and Balboa Park. Take right and drive to The Obelisk which is the entrance to the park.

You may park your vehicle in the parking lots available in Balboa Park for jus US$ 1.00

Buses bound to Planes de Renderos are: Route 12, 17 bus and minibus. Boarding from San Salvador at the central market. Tickets: US$ 0.20, US$ 0.25 and US$ 0.35 (weekends).

Where to eat:

This site has many options specially the pupuserías located In the food court (Maize Plaza) where you will find a variety of local dishes made from corn, at affordable prices starting at US$ 0.50 and up.

- Note: Customer service hours are extended until 10:00 pm for the dining area.

Admission:

- US$ 0.50 per person ( FREE for children under 8 years old and adults over 60).

- US$ 1.00 for parking service.
