Enjoy the criollo taste of a traditional Salvadoran bread and turkey sandwich (Pan con Chumpe) or famous pupusas, in this small, but friendly restaurant in Izalco.

Cooked “home style” Panes Meme is pleased to use only organic ingredients to prepare the tasty dishes that are baked in low wood consumption ovens or cooked in traditional clay “comales”.

Panes Meme its best known by its “Panes con Chumpe” a turkey sandwich with a special spicy sauce and stuffed with “curtido” and salad for US$ 1.50. However this eatery also offers delicious pupusas with filings like mora (a local leaf), chorizo , chicken and shrimp from US$ 0.50 each. Their specialty is the “pupusa loca” which has a mixture of all the above ingredients including the regular cheese, beans and pork rinds.

Don’t forget to try their natural drinks and smoothies, and local beverages such as cebada (a drink made of barley) and fresco de ensalada (drink with many vegetables and fruits), from US$ 0.50

How to get there:

By car take the road to Santa Ana (Pan-American highway) and at the overpass known as the “Poliedro”, take the road to Sonsonate. Detour to Izalco is at kilometer 57. It takes about one hour to get there.

If going by bus, there are several options. From the West terminal in San Salvador, you may board “special” route 205 for US$ 1.30 (1 hour and 15 minutes), or regular route 205 for US$ 0.75 (1 hour and 45 minutes). From Sonsonate take Route 53 for US$ 0.23 cents (15 minutes) and from Santa Ana via Cerro Verde take 209 for US$ 0.70 (1 ½ hours). All buses will stop  at the diversion to Izalco. From there you may take a motorcycle taxi for US$ 0.35.
