Savior of the World Monument

| | |

Probably the greatest icon of El Salvador and San Salvador, It is located in the former "Plaza de las Americas" now "El Salvador in World Square".

This iconic monument was created in honor of the Divine Savior of the World, patron of the capital, under the country’s first Eucharistic Congress in 1942.

The image first stood on top of the grave dedicated to former President Manuel Enrique Araujo (1911-1913).

This monument is considered a symbol of hope and faith for the Salvadoran people. During the October the 10th, 1986 earthquake, the statue fell and broke into several pieces. When restoration was finished, and the statue was placed back into its original place, it became a symbol of San Salvador’s recovery after the devastating earthquake.

El Salvador del Mundo image appeared on the back of the former 200 colones note (this was the national currency until the year 2001) and it also appears on the current license plate.
