Monument to the Constitution

| | |

Inaugurated in 1991, this monument is popularly known as “La Chulona” (the naked woman); it symbolizes the value Salvadorans place on the Constitution to protect the new era of peace that came about after the civil war.

It was sculpted by Ruben Martinez, who also created the magnificent monument “Cristo de La Paz”, located on the Highway to Comalapa (El Salvador's International Airport)

The Chulona stands 2.85 meters high and weighs about a thousand pounds. The monument depicts a lady who represents justice, and unlike other figures, it does not wear a bandage over her eyes, but instead has them closed, a symbol that it does not look at anyone differently. Her posture shows character and strength, and her female figure symbolizes a mother taking care of her children.

On Sundays, Constitution Boulevard is closed to traffic and it is transformed into the popular “Ciclo Via” (cycleway) where hundreds of families meet to run, bike or take a walk with their pets (an idea taken from Bogota).

How to get there:

This plaza is located on the intersection of San Antonio Abad Street and Constitution Boulevard.

This monument is located in a busy intersection.

Many bus routes are constantly circulating in the area.

Among them: Route 22, 26 Special, 45, 30-B and 46. Ticket cost about US$ 0.35 to US$ 0.50
