San Salvador's Patron Saint

A tradition that takes place every first week of august at the capital city of El Salvador are the “Fiestas Patronales” in honor of the Divine Savior of the World who is celebrated on the fifth day of that month.

The activities begin with a mariachi serenade dedicated to the patron, at the early morning hours at the monument “El Salvador del Mundo”. Later, the festivities continue with a colorful parade, which is announced with traditional firecrackers.

Thousands of Salvadorans congregate at Alameda Roosevelt and the vicinities of Cuscatlán Park to see the parades that includes Salvadoran traditional characters like the “old ones”, “the giants”, “the Chichimecos”, “El Cipitío” and “La Siguanaba” among others, who are responsible for making practical jokes at the spectators.

Among the highlights of the parade is the elected queen of the festivals, which travels on a special parade car, along with the other candidates that participated at the beauty contest.

There are also many school bands and cheerleaders that march along the parade.

During the holidays many “capitalinos” visit the traditional fairs, which have traditional snacks like “elote loco”, sweets and many other treats.

However the main attractions are the mechanical rides, popularly known as “Wheels” where children, youth and adults test their courage.
