The Lagoon Jocotal

This lagoon is a natural haven in eastern El Salvador characterized by its pristine waters and the magical landscape that surrounds it.

Over the years, this of 350 hectare lagoon, has received many recognitions for its rich biodiversity: in 1976 as a protected area, in 1983 was declared as a “Bird Sanctuary” and later in 1996 as the first “Ramsar” site in the country.

There are over 18 different types of fish including Nicaraguan and Salvadoran guapote, black crappie, tilapia, catfish, baboon, ilama, guabima and freshwater shrimp. In addition there are over 120 species of aquatic and land plants.

Among the birds that can be seen at El Jocotal are: blue heron, white heron, ducks, caraos among many kinds of migratory birds. In addition, there are numerous reptiles such as lizards and snakes inhabiting this protected area.

If you want to explore the calm waters of La Laguna El Jocotal, you may board a boat for US$ 1.00 per person. The tour takes place in rowing canoes since motorized boats are not allowed. You might even try fishing during your tour.

Where to eat:

You may bring your own food and enjoy it at the designated eating areas. Also, there are a few “comedores” (basic restaurants) with diverse dining options at affordable prices.

How to get there:

Drive east along the coastal highway to Usulután (CA-2), then follow the signs that indicate the detour to the Lagoon. This exit is on the right side of the road, slightly after the entrance to El Espino Beach. You may park your vehicle in the parking lot.

Bus routes:

- From San Salvador to San Miguel: Route 301. Ticket cost US$ 3.00

- From San Miguel to Usulután: Route 373. Ticket cost US$ 0.75

Note: You must get off at “The Transit”, Usulutan.
