El Espino lagoon

Formerly known as Huitziapan or The Lagoon of Thorns, the site is a place of great historical importance due to many events that happened in El Salvador in the eighteenth century.

It is said that at the shores of this lagoon, near the city of Ahuachapán, the first battle of Central American post -independence times was fought. The battle is known as “Battle of Llano El Espino” and it took place on March 12, 1822. It was led by General Manuel José Arce.

The Guatemalan army was under the command of Sergeant Nicolás Abos Padilla who was defeated in the event.

Currently this site serves as fishing and farming grounds for locals.

If you visit the Laguna El Espino, you will see an attractive landscape surrounded by mountains (near the border with Guatemala) making this a unique natural area.

How to get there:

Address: Km 100, Pan-American Highway, near the border Las Chinamas, Abroad.

If driving from San Salvador, take the road to Santa Ana, continue to Chalchuapa, and follow the directions to the border Las Chinamas. The Lagoon will be on your left side after the city of Ahuchapán.

By bus take Route 202 from San Salvador to Ahuachapán, cost from US$ 1.50 to US$ 2.50. You can also board route 210 from Santa Ana at U.S. $ 0.75. At the bus terminal take a “mototaxi” (tuk-tuk) from US$ 0.50 (per person)

Other routes that circulate in the area are: R-9-AH bound for Colonia El Carmen. Ticket cost from US$ 0.25.
