Alegria Lagoon

Alegría Lagoon is located on top of Tecapa Volcano, in the Chinameca mountain range, province of Usulután, eastern El Salvador.

This magnificent lagoon is famous for the emerald color of its waters, due to their high sulfur content.

This peaceful and quiet place is located at 1,600 meters above sea level, and most of the time is covered by a thick layer of fog, which sometimes creates a surrealistic appearance.

It was nicknamed “America’s Emerald ” by Chilean poet and literature Nobel Prize winner, Gabriela Mistral.

Alegría Lagon It is ideal for relaxing, hiking along its shores, and even camping on this beautiful and unique site.

How to get there:

If you are driving from San Salvador, take the Coastal Highway (CA-2) just as if you were going to Comalapa Airport . Follow the signs that lead to Usulután. After passing "Puente de Oro" (Golden Bridge) look for the Usulután by-pass, this will take you to Santiago de Maria and then to Alegría.

The lagoon is situated 2 km from the town of Alegría, just follow the signs or asks the locals.

Bus route:

From San Salvador to Usulutan: Route 302. Ticket is US$ 1.50. You should then take Route 348 to travel to Alegría. Cost of the ticket US$0.35 you may board this bus in Santiago de María or Berlin.

Alegría has a tourist office that provides useful information and is located just across from St. Peter Apostle Church, at the town square.

    Es un bonito lugar con una exelente panoramica pero les hace falta poner una forma de transporte hacia la laguna para las personas que no tienen como llegar.

      Estimada Melissa, los autobuses llegan hasta el Parque Central de Alegría, luego podrás iniciar una impresionante caminata hacia la Laguna de Alegría. Regards
