St. Mary Magdalene Church, Tacuba
Located 16 kilometers from Ahuchapán, this church erected as St. Mary Magdalene at the municipality of Tacuba is one of the churches in western El Salvador with great historic legacy.
The temple is located near the same place where you may see the remains of the seventeenth century church.
However, since the original structure collapsed, efforts where carried out in order to build a new one.
Today the church is open to worshippers and tourists alike, it has a simple, but picturesque style. Inside there is a wood cabinet, where the image of Christ that is used at the procession during the festivities of Holy Week is kept.
The church also houses three bells from the early nineteenth century that were cast in San Salvador. Two of them can show the dates of their creation: 1927 and 1931 respectively. Today, the three bells are in working condition, they have cracks that do not detract from their beauty.
Try visiting Tacuba, during the celebrations in honor of Santa Maria Magdalena, (July 17th to the 22nd each year).
How to get there:
If driving from San Salvador, drive towards Santa Ana and continue on the Pan-American Highway (CA-1) towards Chalchuapa, and Ahuachapán. Once in Ahuachapán, ask the police or locals for 2nd South Avenue.
The best reference point is ice cream shop “The Nevería” located at the corner. Once there you will see a sign indicating the route to Tacuba. The town is 16 kilometers away. The church is located right after the town square of Tacuba.
By bus: take Route 202 from San Salvador to Ahuachapán. Ticket cost from: US$ 1.50 to US$ 2.50. You can also board route 210 from Santa Ana at U.S. $ 0.75. At the bus terminal route 264 will take you to Tacuba. Ticket cost US$ 0.60.
