Santa Lucia Church, Juayúa
Built from 1953 to 1956, this temple is dedicated to Santa Lucia. It is one of the main destinations visited by locals and foreign tourists at the town of Juayúa.
Popularly known as the Church of the Black Christ of Juayúa, here you will appreciate colorful stained glass brought from Europe, depicting biblical passages that complement images brought from Spain, that also enhance the unique architectural details of the temple.
Many parishioners come to the Catholic church to venerate the image of Christ that resembles the one from Esquipulas, making their visit very similar to the custom carried out in Guatemala, that consists of walking around the altar and praying facing the cross.
During your visit to Juayúa don’t forget to stop at this majestic temple that embellishes the streets of this picturesque town at La Ruta de las Flores.
How to get there:
Drive towards Sonsonate using the Panamerican Highway (CA-1) towards Santa Ana. At “El Poliedro” overpass take the highway towards Sonsonate.
Start your tour through the streets of Sonsonate. Drive along the Flower Route towards Apaneca, the road is well signposted.
Along the way you will find signs indicating you how to reach the destination of you interest along the Route. The journey by car takes about an hour.
If going by bus, there are several options. At the West terminal in San Salvador, you may board “special” bus 205 at US$ 1.30
(Journey takes about1 hour and 15 minutes), regular bus route 205 costs US$ 0.75 USD (journey takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes).
The church is located across form the Central Park at Juayúa.
