St. Michaels Church
It is estimated that the original temple was built in the ninenteenth century, but there are no records to support that fact. However on top of the church’s facade there is a year showing “1824″, a clue that suggests the year in which construction work began.
The materials used were heavy masonry walls and tile roof. The design is baroque and post-colonial style.
The infrastructure suffered severe damage from the earthquakes of 2001 and the temple has remained closed for several years. A new temple was built adjacent to it, between the years 2006 to 2009. The new temple is similar to the original.
As curious fact there is a popular story that tells about of an invasion of bats that occurred at Salcoatitán. The story says that St. Michael protected the inhabitants from the pest, since then he was consecrated as the patron of the town.
This colorful town celebrates its holidays every second Sunday of November as part of their Catholic tradition.
