Our Lady of the Assumption Church
This beautiful church was started in the eighteenth century on the grounds where the former city cemetery was located. This happened after an earthquake in 1702, which seriously damaged the first temple.
Nowadays you may see an imposing church, next to the colorful “Pasaje La Concordia”, as part of the historic center of the city of Ahuachapán.
This beautiful colonial-style church is spacious, with beautiful wood accents and religious representations including “The Risen Christ”, and also the Heart of Jesus and Mary, the latter surrounded by twelve stars symbolizing the twelve tribes of Biblical Israel.
The two main towers have great dimensions; they also have arches oriented towards the four cardinal points.
The image of Our Lady of Assumption, like many found in the temple, were brought from Spain and were originally displayed at the Church of Tacuba before the year 1700. The wood altarpieces where also brought from that colonial church that collapsed due to an earthquake.
As a historical note: Independence hero, Dr. Isidro Menéndez served as pastor of this Church. His remains are buried in this site, including those of former President, General Francisco Menéndez (1830-1890).
How to get there:
Address: Francisco Menéndez South Avenue, between 3rd West St. and Pasaje La Concordia.
If driving from San Salvador, drive towards Santa Ana and continue on the Pan-American Highway (CA-1) towards Chalchuapa, and Ahuachapán. Once you are there, ask the police or locals for “Pasaje La Concordia”. The colorful murals on the walls of the passage will guide you.
By bus take Route 202 from San Salvador to Ahuachapán, cost from US$ 1.50 to US$ 2.50. You can also board route 210 from Santa Ana at U.S. $ 0.75. At the bus terminal take a “mototaxi” (tuk-tuk) from US$ 0.50 (per person) and within minutes you will find yourself at this beautiful site in Ahuachapán.
