La Merced Church

| |

This historic temple hosts the historical bells that tolled on November 5, 1811, at the hands of local hero José Matías Delgado, as a prelude to the independence of El Salvador from the Spanish Crown, which culminated ten years later.

The foundations of the old masonry bell tower are still standing, but not the top, which was rebuilt as a replica in 1995, as a way of preserving this unique independence icon.

If you want to visit the interior of the main temple you will see simple details such as religious images and a mural portraying different historical characters that have played important roles in the liberation of the people of El Salvador.

The remains of independence hero José Manuel Arce were buried in the chapel of this temple where he served as a priest. It is important to know that José Matías Delgado was buried in the church of El Rosario, just across Plaza Libertad.
