El Rosario Church, San Miguel

| | |

The historic center of San Miguel has many architectural jewels, some of them are over two centuries old.

One of the best examples of this, is the central parish “The Rosary” also known as Santo Domingo Church.

It is just two blocks from the cathedral on 4th North Avenue. This church opened its doors in the eighteenth century under the administration of Dominican priests and it now holds some of the oldest files regarding the city of San Miguel.

Originally the church was used only for the Marian festivals held every first Sunday of May and October in honor of Virgen del Rosario.

The architectural details of this temple have great beauty, starting with its striking wooden doors decorated with intricate details.

Inside you may see impressive ancient large-scale imagery, some of them gifts from families thanking for granted requests.

Large wooden columns decorate the main nave; there is a remarkable concave wooden niche, which reads “Most Sacred Queen rosaries” in Latin and where the main image of Virgen del Rosario is displayed.

Walking through the main corridor you will appreciate the unique ceiling decoration.

At the walls near the front door and the main altar there are marble tombstones, dating back to1857 and 1901, where the remains of Dominicans priest now lie. This is also the resting place of many important citizens of San Miguel including:

Priest Santiago Palacios, patron of the church who died in 1878.

Joseph M. Palacios, who was born in 1824 and died in Nicaragua 1881.

Rafael Palacios who died on October 3, 1901 20 years of age.

Salvador Villafáñez, who died on August 28, 1857 at 18.

Today this church is open to everyone and is for various religious activities.
