Catholic Church at San Rafael, Chalatenango

Located just 69 kilometers way from San Salvador, this town founded in 1881, honors San Rafael Arcangel as its patron.

Initially this village was called Llano Grande. But it received its actual name by a legislative decree.

History suggests that this area was one of the largest haciendas in Chalatenango, where major crops included corn and jiquilite ( indigo plant) and managed by ladinos ( people of European and indigenous descent).

The church is located opposite the town’s central park. Inside you will see ancient traditional imagery. This town is just minute’s away form better-known town Dulce Nombre de Maria.

San Rafael celebrates its festivities from the 18th to the 23rd of October in honor of its patron and every December 15th and 16th in honor of the Virgin of the Helpless.

 

How to get there

From San Salvador drive north along “Troncal del Norte Road” Road (4N) towards Apopa and Aguilares.

At the diversion known as “Amayo” turn right to Chalatenango city. Then drive to the diversion known as “El Limón”.

Bus routes:

From San Salvador to Chalatenango take route 125 or Route 126, for US$ 1.00 to US$ 1.75 USD at the East Terminal (Terminal de Oriente) bound by to El Limón, Chalatenango.
