Church of St. Andrew the Apostle

Just 91 kilometers from San Salvador you will find the beautiful town of Apaneca, with its impressive scenarios, one of the highlights of “Ruta de las Flores”.

Constructed in 1798, the ancient Church of St. Andrew the Apostle of was an architectural gem that stood until 2001, when the earthquakes of that year severely damaged it beyond repair.

It was considered a cultural heritage of the nation and an emblem of the colonial legacy in El Salvador.

Today the new church looks similar to the old one, after arduous work.

The style can be considered colonial. From its facade the main dome can be seen and with its colonial look.

Festivities at Apaneca are held from November 21st to 30th every year in honor of St. Andrew the Apostle. During this time it’s a good time to visit and enjoy a the religious events, parades and processions.

How to get there:

Drive along the Flower Route towards Apaneca, the road is well signposted. From San Salvador you may start your tour through the streets of Sonsonate.

The church is on the opposite side of Central Park and the municipal market.

You can also take 208 route from Sonsonate to Ahuachapán for US$ 0.75.
