Jaltepeque Estuary

Located in the borderline of La Paz and San Vicente departments this protected area holds many marine species and one of the most beautiful landscapes of El Salvador.

This Mangrove forest has a linear extension of 28 kilometers and several small channels to explore.

This estuary is a refuge for many birds, both resident and migratory such as herons, ducks, and gulls. Also, this is the habitat of various mollusks that live within the roots of the mangroves trees.

If you want to extend your trip, plan for an offshore experience, by traveling thru the channels to the Lempa River mouth. The cost of this boat trip is around US$ 15 to US$ 35 and you may take it from Playa La Puntilla.

Alternative you can schedule boat tours with nearby restaurants and hotels who offer this service with meals included, at prices ranging from US$ 75, US$ 85 onwards for groups of 12 or more.

How to get there:

If you driving from San Salvador go down to CA-2 (Coastal Highway) going east, At mile 43 you will find the detour to Costa del Sol, turn right and continue along until you reach Costa del Sol boulevard. Playa La Lace, is the last stop and its located at kilometer 78.

If traveling by bus, take route “495” from San Salvador to Costa del Sol and La Puntilla. Fares from US$ 1.25

Where to eat:

Among the most visited tourist attractions is Tasajera Island with its famous virgin beaches, however at Los Negros beach there are several “ranchos” type restaurants where you can have fresh seafood and seafood cocktails at affordable prices (US $ 1.50, US$ 3 and up)
