Diconte & Shaft

| | |

One of the first businesses to be recognized as a “must see” along the “Ruta de las Flores” (The Flowers Route) was Diconte & Axul; a handcraft, textile and art store that has become a reference point to people visiting Ataco.

Established 7 years ago in an old house dating back to 1910, near the center of town; Diconte & Axul offers tourists the best opportunity to buy crafts from El Salvador, Guatemala and other Central American countries. In addition, you may admire beautiful murals with the now famous colorful “Cats” introduced by the artists Alvaro Orellana and Cristina Pineda, who also run the shop.

At Diconte Axul you can also see how local artisans make colorful fabrics treadle looms, a tradition that is disappearing throughout Latin America. You may purchase these unique fabrics from US$ 6.00 to US$8.00 a yard.

What to eat:

On the site you may also enjoy a delicious coffee and tasty dessert at Cafe El Sitio. It also features entrees, their specialty are steaks, “gallo en chicha” (rooster stew in a spicy chicha sauce) and spaghetti. The prices vary between US$ 2.00 and US$ 7.00

Many tourists prefer to dine on the outside tables located in the extensive gardens of the house, where you may enjoy the pleasant climate of the region.
