Monsignor Romero City Tour

Bishop. Romero City Tour is a unique touristic circuit in El Salvador, due its recent historical value. Mgr Romero, a salvadorean priest and archbishop, whose work went trough the international history because his ecclesiastical work in favor of the poor and justice, which earned him a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The City Tour will allow you to feel and experience the life and work of Mgr. Rosemary, a man of faith who broadcast to the world a message of hope, which lives on in the hearts of the Salvadoran people and thousands of followers of his word in the world.

The City Tour

This tour includes a tour that starts at the Romero Center and UCA Martyrs Museum, continues at the Cathedral of San Salvador to visit the crypt of Mgr. Rosemary, then you visit the Museum of the Word and Image(MUPI), and ends at the Centre History Monsignor Romero, in the Divine Providence Hospital.

Extendend Tour

The City Tour Romero extends the route to two days, visiting the National Museum of Anthropology (FIRST), you can also visit in Santa Tecla, the Sanctuary of Monsignor Romero, and El Paseo El Carmen. The extension of the tour also suggests visiting the historical center of San Salvador: The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus(Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus), the Rosary Church(Iglesia El Rosario) and the National Palace(National Palace).

Points of interest within the City Tour

Romero Center and Museum of the Martyrs, UCA
Exposes the museum in honor of the martyrs and victims of the civil war, and in the “Hall of Martyrs”, personal items of Monsignor Oscar Arnulfo Romero.

Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador
In the Cathedral lie the remains of Monsignor Romero. His crypt is the bishop “sleeping the sleep of the just”, surrounded by the four evangelists.

Museum of the Word and Image MUPI
It exhibits a series of photographs of Monsignor Romero, which presents a review of his travels and his love of photography, named “Rosemary, Voice and Mirada.”

Romero Historical Center, Divine Providence Hospital
The Historic Center opens its doors to show the house in which lived Monsignor Romero, while he was Archbishop of San Salvador, until his assassination in the chapel of the hospital. (Suggested donation hospital office)

National Museum of Anthropology, FIRST
One of the museum’s permanent exhibits, is the religion’s room in which is presented a chronological overview of life and work of Mgr. Rosemary.

National Palace
Declared a national monument in 1974. It has combined Neoclassical style, Gothic and Renaissance.

The Rosary Church
It has a modern architectural design with European which is unique in the american continent. The structure has no pillars, giving a full view to the altar.

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Neo-Gothic style with influences of the nineteenth century hosted of the Archbishop of San Salvador, between 1989 and 1999.

Paseo El Carmen
With a bohemian atmosphere, live music and delicious local and international cuisine, you will reach the main icon of this place, the majestic El Carmen church, temple reared in the eighteenth century.

Romero Sanctuary, Sisters Chacón
Sisters Chacon family was very close to Monsignor Romero, they can tell us stories, anecdotes and especially they talk about the simplicity of Mgr. Rosemary, he used to call them his family. Here you can enjoy the special dish called “Frijolitos Monsignor Romero”
