Puerto San Juan Tourist Center
Since February 2005 the “flower bird city” (Suchitoto) has had a port and a tourist center where all visitors can enjoy traditional food, boat trips and ferry service, all this surrounded by the natural environment provided by beautiful Lake Suchitlán.
Along the cobbled road down to Puerto San Juan Tourism Center you will see spectacular views of the lake, and you may also stop for food at the many restaurants (dining) by the side of the road.
After a mile or so, you will find entrance to the facilities where you may use Its has ample and secured parking (for a small fee).
What to do
At Puerto San Juan Tourist Center you will find an ample array of tourist services attended by locals, including boat tours to Lake Suchitlán. You may also buy handicrafts, souvenirs and other products at affordable prices.
Boat rides are available from 1 to 10 persons:
- 30 ride at lake Suchitlán from US$ 20.00
- The Hermit Island (50 minutes) from US$ 25.00
- Bird Island (1 hour) from US$ 30.00

Where to eat
There are eight small restaurant located on a common area. Food options vary from local dishes, to seafood specialties, grilled food, soft drinks, and beers at affordable prices.
At restaurant Atlempán, meaning in Nahuatl language “On the water’s edge” you will enjoy dishes like gallo en chicha” (rooster stew), seafood, and the house specialty: steak cooked inside banana leaves.
You can also taste some natural drinks, beer and liquor, at affordable prices, Restaurant at tutul, which means “place of birds.”
Restaurant hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (weekends until 7:00 p.m.)
How to get there:
Distance from San Salvador: 47 kilometers.
From San Salvador you may drive along the Boulevard del Ejército Nacional (National Army Boulevard) or Pan-American Highway. Drive to San Martin and follow the signs to Suchitoto. The drive takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.
