St. John the Baptist Cathedral

| | |

Located across the central square at the city Chalatenango, this church is an architectural jewel located at northern El Salvador.

According to historical records, the construction of the first adobe temple at the city took place in 1713 at the same place where the current church stands today. It was not until 1848 that work began to build the temple that we see today.

In 1893 the facade was completed, that year is displayed at the main entrance. Finally in 1898 the church was completed after several restoration processes.

The church is dedicated to San Juan Bautista, patron of the town. Festivities take place each June 24th.

Known as ” Cathedral of Chalatenango” the church has withstood the forces of nature and events like the armed conflict of the 1980’s.

Inside you will appreciate Catholic imagery and the redesigned main altar, which is made of stones from the iconic Sumpul River.
