Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
One of the last remnants of nineteenth century buildings, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is an important icon of architecture Catholic architecture in downtown San Salvador.
The bishop of San Salvador, Antonio Adolfo Perez and Aguilar, constructed this basilica dedicated to the Sacred Heart. It January 1901 the project received a solemn blessing as the first stone was laid out. The construction process took about two decades, during which time it endured a strong earthquake on June 7, 1917 affecting the central part.
It is considered a treasure of the capital, with its imposing neo-Gothic design and colorful influences of the nineteenth century.
Over the years, the structure made of wood and metal sheets, a technique imported from Europe, has survived many earthquakes, most notable are: 1917, 1919, 1965, 1986 and 2001.
This building technique made of wood and metal sheets has been well preserved, thus a visit to this Basilica is like a trip back to San Salvador in early nineteenth century.
As a curiosity from 1989 to 1999, this Basilica served as the main temple for the Archbishop of El Salvador, while the Metropolitan Cathedral was closed during the final stages of construction.
