Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe
San Salvador treasures interesting relics consecrated to the Catholic faith. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is no exception. This temple is located at the western end of the capital, located on the border between the municipalities and San Salvador and Antiguo Cuscatlan.
Popularly known as “La Ceiba de Guadalupe” is one of the most famous churches in the country. It serves ostentatious weddings, baptisms and various religious activities. However their main event takes place on December 12th. Celebrating the famous apparition of the Virgin Mary to Juan Diego (in Mexico) 5 centuries ago.
During this time of the year the church acquires a festival-like atmosphere and a series of religious rituals takes place. There are musical groups, mariachis at midnight and fireworks.
Children (and some adults) dress as “Indians” (peasant attire) to express gratitude and, simultaneously to commemorate the apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe to Juan Diego, at Tepeyac hill, in Mexico in 1531.
This festival is very important. Thousands of Salvadorans from different parts of the country travel to be a part of the festivities. Outside the temple there are rides and typical Salvadoran food.
It is said that this magnificent church was begun in the year of 1913 at the initiative of Father Antonio Brunetti. The task was completed forty years later in 1953. The construction of this temple was made possible by the collaboration of renowned German philanthropist Walter Deininger, who also financed the construction of several important buildings in Antiguo Cuscatlan.
