Jaquilisco Bay

Jiquilisco Bay is an majestic place, located in the department of Usulután, is a natural treasure visited by national and international tourists.

This is the largest mangrove forest in El Salvador. It serves as the habitat for an abundance of fish, exotic birds, and for reptiles like snakes, iguanas, turtles and crocodiles.

This area was declared a “Biosphere Reserve” and “Ramsar Site” in 2005.

Jiquilisco Bay is considered one of the most beautiful marine ecosystems in El Salvador, there are 55 kilometers of coastline, and its located just a little over 100 km from San Salvador.

If you want to know more about this spectacular site, the Jiquilisco Bay Association for Tourist Development (ASDETUR) has six tourist routes available that will take you to Xiriualtique or “Bay of the Stars.”

This is a community initiative supported by the non- governmental organization “ActionAid” and Spanish authorities that have supported the initiative.

Some of the activities recommended are: visiting the floating restaurants, sport fishing, tour the historic ship graveyard and visiting a coconut plantation and processing plant. You’ll need to embark at El Malecón on El Triunfo Port.

The routes are:

• Route 1: Restaurant Xitiaultique ”

Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes

Price:

a) 1 to 5 persons US$ 15.00

b) 6 to 10 persons US$ 20.00

• Route 2: “The Tular” Beach and Cabo Tortuga Restaurant

Duration: 2 hours, 15 minutes

Price:

a) 1 to 5 persons US$ 45.00

b) 6 to 10 persons US$ 55.00

• Route 3: Coconut Processing Plant “The Jobal”, “Palace of Birds” Island and Playa Palmeras Restaurant.

Duration: 3 hours

Price:

a) 1 to 5 persons US$ 45.00

b) 6 to 10 persons US$ 55.00

• Route 4: Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit) Beach and Playa Palmeras Restaurant.

Duration: 3 hours

• Route 5: Sport fishing (fishing rod hire US$ 5.00 per hour) with the option of eating your own fish on the floating restaurants.

Duration: 1 hour 20 minutes

• Route 6: "Culture at The Levee" to visit: Interpretation Centre, however, boat graveyard, tour inside a boat.

Duration: 2 hours

At the floating restaurants, you will find many seafood specialties such as ceviche, cocktails, breaded fish and seafood soup (seafood) at prices varying from US$ 4, US$ 8 to US$ 10.

These floating restaurants have a capacity for 32 people. There are clean and eco-friendly restrooms.

How to get there:

If you are driving from San Salvador to Usulután, we recommend first driving towards Comalapa Airport and then taking the Coastal Highway going east (CA-2). Just when are about to reach San Marcos Lempa town you will run into signs indicating the road to “El Malecon” at Puerto El Triunfo in Jiquilisco Bay.

You may park your vehicle in the secured parking lot for US$ 1.00. Open from 5:00 am until 10:00 pm.

NOTE:

You must board a boat at Puerto El Triunfo to reach this destination. Ask for packages available in the Information Booth at El Malecón.

Bus route:

- From San Salvador to Usulutan: Route 302. Ticket cost US$ 1.50

- San Salvador to Puerto El Triunfo, Usulutan (direct): Route 185. Ticket cost US$ 1.50

- Usulutan Area: Route 363 to Jiquilisco, Usulutan, Santa Elena and Puerto El Triunfo. Fares from US$ 0.35.
