Axul School of Visual Arts
As part of an initiative that seeks to enrich the artistic creativity of ahuachapanecos, Axul School of Fine Arts started free courses for children and adults focusing on arts and music.
The main goal at this academy is to provide quality education at low cost. Prices start at US$ 4.00 for 90 minutes materials included. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. including weekends.
Courses available are:
- For children 5 to 10 years old and 10 to 15 years old:
a) Drawing and painting
b) Engraving and printing
c) Pre-Columbian Art
d) Crafts
- For adults:
a) Drawing and painting
b) Technical illustration
c) Tye dye
d) Batik
and) Macrame
They also offer English classes (8 levels) at US$ 20.00 per module, or if you like music, you may take guitar lessons, bass guitar or drums for the same price. They also teach chess techniques and theater from US$ 5.00.
Where to eat:
As a complementary effort, Axul has a cafeteria with a “bohemiam” style where delicious dishes are prepared at affordable prices, from US$ 2.50 for sandwiches, daily specials, desserts or coffee.
How to get there:
Address: 2nd North Avenue and 4th West St, # 2-1, Barrio El Calvario, Abroad. A block from El Calvario Church.
If driving from San Salvador, drive towards Santa Ana and continue on the Pan-American Highway (CA-1) towards Chalchuapa, and Ahuachapán. Once you are there, ask the police or locals for El Calvario Church.
Axul School of Fine Arts is located on the left side of the street, (on a sloping street).
By bus take Route 202 from San Salvador to Ahuachapán, cost from US$ 1.50 to US$ 2.50. You can also board route 210 from Santa Ana at U.S. $ 0.75. At the bus terminal take a “mototaxi” (tuk-tuk) from US$ 0.50 (per person)
