The Peace Tree

| | |

The Peace Tree (The Peace Tree) is an icon in San Salvador, it symbolizes the transition from the civil war (1979-1992) to an era of democracy and understanding. This Ceiba tree was declared as “The Peace Tree” by a legislative decree in 1992, to commemorate the newly signed Peace Accords, that ended 12 years of armed conflict.

It should be noted that Ceiba trees have been considered a “sacred tree” by pre-Columbian cultures, and were believed to be portals to “the corners of the world”, and indicated the cardinal points where the roots entered the underworld, while the upper branches, held up the sky.

Underneath this tree there is a bronze statue in memory of the former Governor for the department of San Salvador, Eusebio Oscar Argueta; better known as “The Chebo”. Argueta was one of the founders of the political party Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (ARENA) and served as departmental governor for 20 years. He was also one of the people who helped build the Cuscatlán Stadium, just across the street from “El Árbol de La Paz”.

Currently, the Tree of Peace is a focal point to celebrate sporting victories of the national soccer team.
