Surfing is one of the main attractions found in La Libertad, and along the “Sun and Beach Route”.
Here the water temperature is pleasant throughout the year. Height, speed and consistency of the waves are key factors that make La Libertad beaches among the best according to local and foreign surfers who compete in international tournaments in these waters. • El Tunco Beach
Located just 37 kilometers from San Salvador, Playa El Tunco has become a favorite destination on “The Sun and Beach Route” especially for those who enjoy nightlife and some of the best waves for surfing.
Visit “Surfers”, shop and surfboard repair in the area. You can receive surfing lessons from US$ 10 an hour and US$ 5 for board rental. This particular site offers special discounted rates for surfers who want to practice more than 5 times during the week.

How to get there:
By car, driving from San Salvador, take the road to Puerto de La Libertad, turn right (towards El Malecón) continue along the Coastal Highway until you reach kilometer 42. There are signposts indicating the entrance to the beach.
If traveling by bus, routes 102, 107 or 177 from Bolivar Park in downtown San Salvador. The cost is US$ 1.50.
• El Sunzal Beach
Located at kilometer 44 along the coastal road, El Sunzal is one of a series of beaches where surfers gather to challenge the force of the waves. Considered by professionals and international media to be among the world’s best waves for surfing, it is also an excellent place for snorkeling and shallow diving.
In Kayu Surf Bar & Grill surf training is offered at US$ 10 an hours plus US$ 10 for board rental (daily).

• Playa El Zonte
Located at kilometer 53 along the Coastal Highway, this beach is well known for its wide selection of hotels, hostels and restaurants with a bohemian touch. Also, this is an excellent beach that hosts major national and international surf competitions.
A good choice staying the night is the hostel “Esencia Nativa” that has both beginners or advanced surf classes in instructed in Spanish or English for $ 20 an hour including equipment. Lessons are individual by a trained personnel.
